they were sent to tell him that God would keep His promise and Sarah would conceive a son very soon
Abraham knew that they were messengers of God and not humans
he beckoned them to come and sit down and eat with him
when the angels told Abraham that Sarah would become pregnant, she overheard them, and laughed quietly to herself

sure enough,
she conceived a child, just like God had promised.
